Where Did The Summer Go?

10/13/2014

I just realized that I have not wrote an update since May 1st ! Holy Cow, where did the summer go? I was so busy working my Summer job that the new school year snuck up on me real fast... As far as the Lund Poultry goes, we finished the 2014 hatching season strong. We ended up hatching nearly 1,000 chicks, 70 geese, and around 50 Call Ducks.

Probably the most exciting young birds we have kept are our group of young Sebastopols. After our first year breeding Overton birds, we decided to keep about 20 young birds and grow out. All of our extras will be for sale at the Ohio National in November.

This year also brought us the best Buff Call Ducks we've ever raised. We have made some significant improvements over the past few years with this variety, and it really shows this season.

We had a great Summer show season, exhibiting our birds at our local and county fairs. Our Buff Brahma hen had Champion Of Show for the second year in a row at the Stoughton Fair. At the Rock County 4-H Fair, we had Champion & Reserve Goose.

We already have some Fall shows under our belt also! Our first show was the Wisconsin International Poultry Show. The show was set-up beautifully, ran smoothly, and their was a TON of quality waterfowl. I believe the goose numbers were some where around 130! Gary Overton judged the Medium Goose class and chose one of our Young Sebastopol Ganders to be Champion Medium. We entered one goose in the Junior show (American Buff Hen), and she won Champion Goose Overall. Our little Pastel Call Hen won another BV honor in a large, quality Pastel class.

Our Salmon Faverolle Large Fowl seem to be on a role also... We have had Champion Continental at every show so far this year. I am really looking forward to seeing how well they do at the Ohio National with some more competition in their breed.

Another exciting part to our summer is that we purchased a brand-new trailer! We built goose pens on the inside with sliding doors. Once full, the trailer has 10 pens on the floor, plus holds all of our pet-carrieres. A double decker goose hauler :)

This Summer passed with a flash, and the Fall is flying by just as fast... too fast... way too fast!
With one more thought, I will wrap this little blog up- I AM DREADING WINTER ALREADY!

Thanks for reading & keep checking for updates on our upcoming breeding season!

Wondrous waterfowl

5/1/2014

Waterfowl season is finally in full swing, and we are very happy! A couple of big things happened over the last weekend, and I am excited to share them with you!

Firstly, we had our second goose hatch of the year. During the first week, we only hatched a single American Buff gosling. The second week we had a much better hatch, which included our first Sebastopols. Tonight we move our third group of eggs into the hatcher, at last count it was about 20 eggs.

The little goslings grow like weeds! These two photos were only taken four days apart. The left image is three Sebastopols, two females and one male. The right image is the same group, just with some American Buffs also.

The next big news is that we purchased a pair of White Chinese geese. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we will still be able to get a few fertile eggs yet this hatching season, but more than likely we will begin hatching White Chinas next year.

The chicken hatches are still gradually increasing... but no where near the hatches we were having last year. Hopefully the season can still turn around....We sure hope so, because we have lots of patient customers awaiting chicks! The Pastel Call Ducks are still all fertile, and we are setting lots of Snowy, Buff and White eggs. It's only a matter of time before we will have ducklings. Stay tuned for some pictures of the tiny little buggers! :) And lastly, just for fun, here is a recent photo of one of our Sebastopol young males. Thanks for reading!     ~Kaylyn

Spring has Sprung!

4/16/2014

Hello everyone! First and foremost, SPRING IS HERE! The snow is melted and the grass is turning green! I'm not sure who is more excited, us or the waterfowl... they love this weather!

As I'm writing this blog we have goose eggs in the hatcher! This last few days of incubation feels like weeks as we are anxiously awaiting our first goslings of the year. The first hatch is mostly Africans with a few Sebastopols as well. We have been setting roughly 35 goose eggs each week, so we are hoping for a good hatching season.

We are also just beginning our Call Duck hatching. Both of our Pastel pens have began laying as well as a few Snowy Pens. We have checked fertility, and are very excited that we have fertile eggs from our 2013 National Champion Pastel Call! Hopefully the rest of the Snowy pens, Buff pens, and White pens kick in laying very soon.

And finally, an update on our chicken hatching. The birds are laying decent now, since the weather has gotten much better in Wisconsin. We are continuing to receive orders every day, so our waiting list is getting longer and longer. We are making our way through our orders, so if you have placed an order with us, it shouldn't be to long now. As always, please be patient and make sure to keep in touch.

Some more exciting news is that we will be firing up another GQF Cabinet Incubator this weekend.... those darn goose eggs take up a lot room and fill the incubators up quickly!

Thank you to all of our customers for being patient and understanding our difficulties during this delayed hatching season.

mY voyage blog!

3/27/2014

Hello everyone! After having some technical difficulties with our previous website host, I decided to take on the huge task of re-constucting our entire site. Ready to launch in just a few days, everything on the new website host, weebly.com, seems to be working perfect!

Things are getting exciting this time of year for Lund Poultry. The geese have started laying, and we have our first eggs in the incubator. As of two days ago, each of our female geese have began laying. I'm hoping for a very productive spring hatch... a much better one than our winter hatch has been. After counting we have a total of 33 goose eggs ready to set this afternoon!

As most of the Midwest knows, Wisconsin has had a long, cold, snowy, cold, rough, freezing, and never-ending winter. Did I mention it was cold? Our chickens all made it through the cold temps just fine, but they pretty much shut down laying eggs. Can you blame them? I wouldn't want to lay eggs when its -30 degrees outside! With measly little weekly hatches, the winter hatching has started off extremely slow. With spring just around the corner, the birds have began to pick up laying. I have my fingers and toes crossed that we will have exceptional fertility and can turn this hatching season around!

Just a few weekends ago, we moved all of the Call Ducks into breeding pens. We have a total of 13 pens for the 2014 year and are hoping for lots of little ducklings very soon.

If you have placed an order with us over the winter, please continue to be patient with us. We have lots of orders to fill and very few available chicks, (so far). Feel free to e-mail us and "like" our Facebook page for updates on our hatching season.

Thank you for taking the time to read my voyage blog!
